An Old Timber Framed House in Lisieux, Normandy
Normandy is one of the most picturesque and culturally rich areas of France, and deserves to be as well known as Provence. However, Normandy has changed a lot over the years, due in part to the relentless march of progress but also to the misfortune of having been the battlefield in the titanic D-Day Landings, which wrecked many of its quaint medieval cities. Although much has been rebuilt, a lot has been lost as well.
This section is a gallery of old paintings and drawings depicting Normandy as it was in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Obviously a lot has changed in Normandy since that time. But much of the picturesque country side and many of the quaint Normandy farm houses remain as they were a century ago.
If you have the opportunity to visit Normandy we recommend that you visit the magnificent Abbey of Mont St. Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most spectacular examples of medieval architecture in the world. If you like rustic tranquility, renting a farm house or staying at a bed and breakfast on a working farm is also a great way to get to know the people and daily life of Normandy.
